Acrylic on canvas
72” x 48”
January 2013
This painting of the god Set (also called Sutekh, Setesh, Suti and Seth) is the earliest work featured in this exhibition and only one of two that were in my debut exhibition 5 years ago.
Before The Blake Prize For Spiritual And Religious Art changed administrative hands, this and one other of my paintings made their way into The Director’s Cut portion of that year's competition. (There was a third that made it once too, but that is another story).
The text above the god’s head was written by me and transliterated by Dr. Tamara Siuda. It reads:
Hail Set Great of strength God of gods You are majestic, beautiful and powerful Grant me strength, magickal power, and [physical] immortality On the earth, in the sky, and in the Duat

Winged Set: the documentary that never was
In 2020 and 2021 (the lockdown era when Melbourne was the most harshly locked down city in the world) I went through a phase of making films to show my work. For various reasons, this one did not make it to completion. (If you are interested to see how some others turned out, come to closing night on July 21st!)
For my documentary about Winged Set, I had tattoos made and filmed some trippy sequences at Sorrento Beach and explored the making of the painting and the incredible statue made from it (coming up further on in this exhibition). I must admit, I loved having Set tattooed all over my body, and this alone made the never-realized project worthwhile.
